Current Narrative:
According to the 2020 Census, Indiana’s population is 6,785,528 (Census, n.d.), and 13.7% among the noninstitutionalized population in 2015-2019 (nearly 930,000), age 18-64, reported a disability. This is slight decrease compared to 2012-2016 (14% reported a disability).
The Department of Labor (DOL) March 2022 (the most recent data available as of this revision) disability employment statistics reports the following for individuals ages 16 and over:
Labor Force Participation
- People with disabilities: 23.1%
- People without disabilities: 67.9%
Unemployment Rate
- People with disabilities: 8.8%
- People without disabilities: 3.5%
8.8% of the projected disability population in Indiana, or approximately 82,000 is an estimate of the number of individuals in Indiana with a disability who are seeking employment and may be eligible for VR services in 2023.
